We would like to welcome our newest school to the Art Corps family.
Dewey Elementary is located in Loma Portal and serves many of San Diego's military families. Parents Jami Barr and Liza Smith have been working very hard since August to get everything ready.
We are looking forward to a great first year beginning next Tuesday, 9/27 @ 8:45am, when we have our orientation meeting.

You can find the school addresses under each school's schedule here, as well as, on the Schools page. If you do plan to attend a workshop at another school, please contact that workshop leader ahead of time.

Summer Meeting 2011

Our 2011 Summer Brunch will be Friday, August 26 at Kathy Peterson's house. Invitations have gone out and we are excited to kick off another year of Art Corps. We will welcome some new faces and reconnect with our wonderful returning coordinators. After enjoying our traditional brunch fare and introductions all around, we will get down to business.

In groups we will set the dates for Orientations, Family Art nights, Art Shows and more. Another special break-out group of our supply coordinators will get the latest information on the art supplies, that our young artists will be getting their hands on soon.

We are also happy to be previewing the new 2nd Edition of the Fifth Grade Lesson Book. We have been busy this summer updating it with new print and book suggestions, new and improved warm-up descriptions and new step by step art work to make teaching easier. Art Corps will be providing these new editions to our schools in time for their first 5th grade workshop.

It's going to be another great year of Art Corps with all of our wonderful volunteers helping kids get smart with art!

Oak Valley Art Show

Oak Valley Middle School's Art Show is this week and we got a preview yesterday of the wonderful work their students have done. Our new lessons designed to connect to the Social Studies curriculum have been a great success. Kudos to Anita, Linda and Janice for their invaluable contribution to the creation and implementation of these new lessons and congratulations to all the volunteers who presented these lessons in the classroom. Here are a few gems.

MATTING WORKSHOPS/ART SHOWS

The Matting workshops have already begun! Important work will now begin leading to the annual Art Show. The Art Show celebrates the artist in every child and the students are very proud to show off their piece to friends and family.

At the matting workshop you will receive instructions for choosing, matting, labeling and displaying the students' artwork from your class at the school-wide Art Show.

It is very important that a representative from your class attends. The materials for labeling and submitting the artwork will also be distributed. If you have questions, please call your school's Head Coordinator for Art Corps.

ART CORPS at KidsWalk 2011

The ART CORPS activity table this year at KidsWalk in Little Italy was a beehive of artistic expression. With Kandinsky as our muse, fabulous artwork was created by children of all ages. Hope you all enjoyed the experience. A BIG THANKS goes to Linda and Liz for expert planning and preparation, and thanks to Julie, Kathleen, Anita, Paula and Kathy for helping out.

Anne McColl, a volunteer from Hearst Elementary, had such a great time volunteering with ArtCorps last year, that she wanted to find a way to share about it.

"I was blown away at the Art Show and took a lot of pictures. I then thought, wow, this would make a great video. So I made one."

2010-2011 FAMILY ART NIGHTS

Art Corps is offering Family Art Nights again this year. Family Art Nights are an opportunity for parents and students to experience art together. Families are able to choose from one of three lessons. This year we are offering Matisse Window, Van Gogh Starry Night and Klee Etching. The first part of the lesson is an introduction to the artist’s life and samples of his work, followed by an explanation of the evening’s lesson, which includes a warm-up with the materials to be used. Parents and their children then complete the lesson.
Three Art Corps leaders teach the lessons. The leaders set up the lesson, teach the lesson and clean up. The school provides the supplies. The fee is $300 per night. We have found that keeping the number of participants at not more than 90 provides the best experience.
